Welcome to a Career as a Clean Energy Technician by Marcia Santore

Clean energy and renewable energy sources go hand in hand. Water, wind, solar, and geothermal all provide sources of abundant energy that are available directly from nature. Clean energy sources don't emit carbon into the atmosphere or radioactive waste into the environment. Renewable energy sources don't get used up. Together, these energy sources provide a sensible and cost-efficient alternative to the fossil fuels and nuclear power we have relied on in the past.

We have the technology to provide energy throughout the United States and the world using clean and renewable energy sources, and we're developing newer and better technology all the time. We need people to develop, make install, and maintain that technology to keep the energy flowing into our communities. That's where clean energy technicians come in.

Clean energy technicians (also called renewable energy technicians) work on all kinds of renewable energy technologies. As a clean energy technician, you'll specialize in a particular type of renewable energy technology. You'll be installing, maintaining, and managing the systems that create energy for our society. You'll be keeping up with the most current developments in the field. And you'll be helping the planet by promoting and providing renewable energy for the present and the future.

Careers in Clean Energy

There are many different kinds of careers in the field of clean or renewable energy - far more than can be covered in one book. Here's a quick list of just some of the available career options:

The Market Today

Clean energy is a growing field. According to the US Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, Clean energy is "one of the fastest-growing, most innovative sectors of our economy," noting that one of the fastest-growing occupations in the United States is wind turbine technician, which added twenty-five thousand new jobs in 2017 alone. Mean while, the office estimates "that one out of every 50 new jobs created nationally came from solar" adding "The core of the industry and the technology's growth continues to be solar installers, who help set up and maintain the panels that are increasingly appearing on rooftops."

There is a market for clean and renewable energy at all levels, from individual homes, to community and statewide efforts, to national policy. Areas with abundant sunshine turn to solar power, while those with the right wind speeds build wind farms. Hydropower can come from large installations like the Hoover Dam, which lies between the states of Nevada and Arizona, or from tiny pico hydro systems that generate less than 5 kilowatts. Your community might find that geothermal is the way to go. Or perhaps the best option is a combination of different technologies, like the hybrid wind and solar project built by Juhl Energies in western Minnesota.

Welcome to the clean energy technicians field! If you are interested in a career as a clean energy technician, you’ve come to the right book. So what exactly do these people do on the job, day in and day out? What kinds of skills and educational background do you need to succeed in these fields? How much can you expect to make, and what are the pros and cons of these various fields? Is this even the right career path for you? How do you avoid burnout and deal with stress? This book can help you answer these questions and more.
