Home Based Businesses - Never Be the Product
By David Block
Part 1
With the instability of today's economy, a lot of people wonder if this is the right
time to start their own home based business. The truth is, it's a big decision to make,
both financially and personally. Many home based businesses have substantial up front
investments, no proven marketing campaigns to bring people to your product, and no system
to make the sales pitch of their product easy.
In this first of this series of articles, I am going to cover why a home based business
makes sense. Then later, I am also going to go over some of the basic information about
which home based businesses to avoid, which ones are successful, and what to look for in
that business plan to make you life a whole lot easier.
Let's face it. We all have dreams of having lots of money. The big house, luxury sports
cars, vacations to exotic locations. Who hasn't thought of having the money to afford the
finer things in life? But how many people look at it from a different approach... how
about dreams of financial freedom? In my book, there is a distinct difference in the two.
Having Lots of Money Does Not Mean Financial Freedom
There are plenty of people in this world that have started at the bottom, and worked
their way up the corporate ladder, and now can afford to have the big house and the luxury
sports cars. But can they afford to go on vacation? Can they afford to go to their kids'
parent-teacher day at school? How about that Little League Baseball game? I am sure as you
gathered by now, I am talking about TIME.
Can they really take the TIME to do want they want, when they want? Of course not! That's
why they get paid the big bucks! It really comes down to this, have you ever wanted to do
something in your personal life that you couldn't because you job got in the way? If you
answered no, then you really don't need to keep reading this article, but I have a feeling
that almost ever person out there answered yes, and I am one of them.
Now what about financial freedom, how is that different? It is my opinion that you
can't achieve financial freedom by answering to someone else, i.e. your boss. I mean think
about it. How can you achieve all those dreams of making lots of money AND spending time
doing what you want if your boss determines it for you? He tells you how much you make,
what hours you work, and when you can take time off. But let's go a little further in
depth than just your boss. I'll ask you another question, "Are you the product?"
Never be the Product, Never be the Product, Never be the Product
Got that yet? It's one of the most important things I ever learned as both a
manufacturing business owner and a home based business owner. But, what does it mean to be
the product? It's really a lot simpler than you might think, but here are a few different
examples of being the product:
