Deciding the Best Online Business to Get Started
by Michael Prest
There is no easy way to define the best online business. You may find a type of online
business to be perfect but the same cannot always be said for someone else. Just like any
industry, the whole "online business" thing is made up of a combination of businesses that
include selling products, offering services, brokering, giving out information, monetizing
content, selling news, offering subscriptions and a whole lot more. What's best for some
may not be the same for others. Having said all of that, here are some of the most common
ways of doing business online. The best online business to start for you might be one of them.
1. Affiliate marketing - For most internet marketers, or online entrepreneurs,
affiliate marketing is their biggest source of income and profit. This is not a surprise
at all because the commissions that affiliate networks and companies offer are usually a
lot bigger than the earnings you can make from other online income sources like display
advertising and sponsored ads.
If you have experience with making offline sales, then it wouldn't be too difficult for
you to understand what affiliate marketing is all about. Basically, you sell a product on
behalf of someone else and you earn a commission. The only difference is that in affiliate
marketing, all of your marketing, promotion and selling activities are done online. Of
course, you can also do some marketing offline but it's usually very limited.
2. Blogging - It is not uncommon to hear of bloggers who earn a full-time income simply
by blogging. There are thousands of professional bloggers out there raking in cash from
their blogs through display ads, affiliate sales, and sponsored posts. It is pretty easy
to set up a blog. The hard work lies in creating high quality content, driving traffic and
building your reader base and their confidence in you. One good piece of advice if you're
planning to start a blog is to focus on a specific niche. You can imagine that to generate
enough quality content for your blog you will have to spend quite some time doing it. If
you spread yourself across too many subjects then it will dilute your efforts. Any
successful blogger will tell you the same advice.
3. Freelancing - If you have a talent or skill like writing, designing websites,
writing programs, creating graphic designs, drawing or coding, then freelancing is a very
good way to start a business online. You can start a copywriting business, a web design
business or a graphic design business. You can do all these as a freelancer. You work at
your own times and you pick only those projects that you are comfortable doing.
4. Direct selling - This is the route to take if you have your own products or services
to sell. Your product could be a novel you wrote, an ebook that you created or a simple
information product. Create a product about a particular interest or hobby. You might sell
it online using a website or a blog that you created yourself. Or you can make use of the
hundreds of online marketplaces like eBay, Amazon or Craigslist to sell your product.
However, you should read their terms and conditions carefully since they have very
specific rules when it comes to selling digital products.
There are of course other ways of conducting business online. The best online business
for some may not be among the four listed above. That's the beauty of the internet - the
availability of so many opportunities. It's up to the enterprising individual or group of
individuals to find those opportunities that are appropriate for them.
